The Breakneck Thruhike. These two warriors totally crushed this advanced hike in just under 6 hours for a new Outerthere record. Yeah! Normally takes 8 or even 10. And then, Poppy’s burgers as our reward. And did we earn it! According to Steve’s Fitbit: 220 flights of stairs (that’s two Empire State Buildings), 10 miles, and twenty two thousand steps. Yes, 22,000. In a single, record busting day.
I'm a bit surprised so many of you are as nutty as I am when it comes to these hard hikes, but due to popular demand, this ADVANCED hike is getting moved up on the agenda. Starting from Breakneck Point in upstate NY, we immediately climb 1,000 feet in elevation in less than an hour (Yeah!), giving us spectacular views of the Hudson. We'll continue along Breakneck Ridge which connects us to Breakneck Ridge Notch, where we'll end up crossing the (in)famous South Beacon Mountain watch tower. And if all that wasn't exciting enough, we will be completing this hike along the Casino Trail via the hidden, unmapped Beacon Reservoir Trails we discovered in 2013's Hard Scouting Hike (Sign up to our email updates to find out about these)! The trip wraps up in Beacon, NY, in the same manner we started, crazy-steep, 1,000 foot descent. This trail promises more exciting terrain, epic scrambling, and awesome vistas than you can shake a stick at!
At the end of the hike, we're crossing the 30-minutes through the entire town of Beacon to the train station, with a refuel pit stop (BEER!) at the end of Main Street before we hop on the train.
We're meeting at the clock at Grand Central Station at 8:30a to catch the Breakneck Ridge train departing 8:44a. (Buy your ticket roundtrip to Beacon for $30.50 at the ticket counter). Expect the hike to go from 10a to 6p point-to-point and our cross through town and pit stop to last until 8p (itinerary subject to change). We'd catch the 8:13p back to Grand Central Station. We're going rain or shine. Read the fine print and what to pack. The hashtag for this trip is #breakneckthruhike
